5 Tips for Staying Motivated During the Holiday Season

The holiday season will be here before you know it, and if it’s like most of your past years, you won’t be as productive at work as you are the rest of the year. With everything else that’s going on this time of the year—gifts to choose, cards to write, travel plans — your on-the-job motivation can weaken.

So, what can you do differently this year to stay motivated at work during the holidays? Here are some tips to help you stay focused and still enjoy everything the holidays have to offer.

  1. Start working on that 2019 project

If you were planning to begin a new project next year, get a jump on it during the holidays. Just because your customers and clients are in slow-moving holiday mode doesn’t mean you can’t remain productive. Work on your strategy and come up with ideas. Anything you can accomplish now will allow you to hit the ground running on your project when 2019 rolls around.

  1. Further your career

Continuing your education is one of the best ways to ensure your professional success. The technical aspects of your job are always changing and evolving, so use this time to participate in webinars and workshops, to learn the latest tricks of your trade. Think of the education as an investment in yourself—or as an early holiday gift!

  1. Make a to-do list

Now could be a good time to assess what you have accomplished in 2018 and what you’ve left undone. Start working on a list of things you need to complete early next year. Then use that list to get started on them right now when things are slow. A to-do list will keep you focused, organized—and motivated!

  1. Update your social media profiles

If the phones have stopped ringing and the flood of emails has slowed to a trickle, use this period of relative calm as an opportunity to update your online profiles. Add new content to your blog or maybe replace your headshot. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is current. Now is the time to address these minor issues before the calendar flips over and 2019 comes rushing in.

  1. Come up with some new ideas

Your co-workers have the holiday blues as work slows down, so rev them up by sharing some new ideas with them. Nothing gets everyone’s creative juices flowing like a brainstorming session. It could make the end of the year productive and provide insights that will add substantial value to 2019.
