In a Rut? Here’s How to Change Up Your Routine at Work

Feeling stuck at work? You may need to change your job to get out of your rut, but more likely, you just need to shake up your routine at work a little bit. Consider these ideas to reinvigorate your daily routine.

Start off on the right foot.

A great workday begins first thing in the morning or even the night before. Set yourself up for success by planning the next day before you leave work. Spend some time before bed reading books that will help you in your job. Create an unrushed morning routine that includes a good breakfast and yoga, meditation or journaling.

Volunteer for a project.

Many people are afraid of change or things that are new, so it can be tough for managers to find people willing to take on tasks that fall outside their daily routine. Tell your supervisor you’re onboard the next time something comes up that uses your skills or better yet, allows you to build them.

Keep a work journal.

Take some time each day to jot down a few thoughts on how your day went. Include accomplishments, goals, difficulties. This helps you take your head out of the daily routine to see what you’re actually accomplishing and how you are progressing toward your goal. This practice can also help when it’s time for your annual review, when you’re ready to ask for a raise or are interviewing for a new job.

Optimize your workspace.

Is your desk or work area set up in the best way for you, ergonomically and productively? Assess what’s working for you and what is not. Place the items you use most close at hand and store everything else out of sight. Do you have a few items that personalize your space? Consider what can be swapped out or removed to refresh the area.

Make your toughest tasks easier.

Everyone has a task they dread in their day. What is yours? Is there anything you can do to make it easier? Consider completing it first thing to get it over with or break it up into parts so you aren’t overwhelmed. Talk to your manager about delegating that task and replacing it with one that better uses your skills.

Find a mentor or become one.

A smart way to advance your career is to partner with a more experienced employee who can teach you new skills or give you advice on promotions and career paths. Alternatively, sharing what you know about your company culture or job with a new or more junior employee can give you a new perspective. It might remind you about the good things in your job or showcase your leadership skills.

Make professional development a priority.

You may be stuck in a rut, because you’ve gone as far as you can in your current role. Assess what skills or experience will be required to get you to the next step In your career.
