3 Things – Besides Coffee – That Will Give You Energy at Work

Some individuals wake up inspired, energized and ready to tackle the day that lies ahead. Not surprisingly, they are called “morning people.” But if you aren’t among this elite group, your day probably begins something like this:

You wake up bleary-eyed because you stayed up late, then you get ready for work in a trance-like state, and you don’t remember your commute since you were only partially conscious during it. As soon as you arrive at work, you head to the coffeemaker for that magic potion that never fails to revive you and officially starts your day.

Yes, coffee is one way to get that morning shot in the arm. But it isn’t the only way, and it might not even be the best way. The caffeine in coffee is addictive, which means if you don’t get it soon enough, you could end up with a nasty headache. And if you’re one of those who dumps sugar and cream into it, you’re drinking a lot of empty calories and setting yourself up for a crash later on.

Here are three alternatives that will supply the energy you need without the side-effects of caffeine.

  1. Take a Walk

Walking is one of the best ways to become energized. It improves fitness, lessens fatigue and depression, improves cardiac health, puts you in a better mood, and helps you be more creative. Also, it can prevent weight gain and reduce the risk of chronic disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. All of these benefits come without pain, stress on your joints, or caffeine.

If you live within a few miles of work, consider walking to it each day. If that isn’t practical, walk during your morning and afternoon breaks, and take at least 30 minutes of your lunch hour to walk around the block several times.

  1. Eat Protein in the Morning

You might be skipping breakfast for a few extra minutes of sleep. So, you stop for coffee and a donut on the way to work. You barely get halfway through the morning when the big crash comes. You feel shaky and light-headed because the sugar-high has burned out.

Protein in the morning gives your body the fuel it needs. It’s more beneficial, maintains your energy levels, and keeps you feeling satisfied longer.

  1. Try Water Instead of Coffee

If you drink a glass of water when you first wake up, it will rev up your metabolism and help lubricate your body. After you get to work, drink another glass. If you miss your hot cup of coffee, try drinking warm water with lemon. If you want more of a jolt, drink a glass of ice-cold water. If you normally have two cups of coffee, substitute water for one of them. Dehydration can leave you feeling drained and fatigued, so drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated and energized.
