Don’t Hesitate and Miss an Opportunity You Have Been Waiting For!

Many people wish for change, but when an opportunity comes along, they tend to hesitate. As much as you might want a new position, you may also fear starting over. But it’s important not to wait too long, as big chances tend to disappear just as quickly as they showed up. Ask yourself these questions, and then, if the opportunity seems right for you, get moving!

What are the benefits?

Fair compensation should be a minimum requirement. If you’re not comfortable with the pay, let it go. Note that you might be willing to work for less money than you would prefer if the other benefits are significant, but the pay should still be reasonable for the work.

Additional benefits are often highly personalized. Maybe it’s a chance to make a career switch or get your foot in the door at your dream company. Perhaps it supports an important mission or your strongest passion. The work hours might be ideally suited to your needs, or the commute may be half of your current travel time. For an opportunity to be worth it, there should be at least a few benefits beyond pay.

What are the downsides?

No position is perfect, so take a few moments to list the negatives. Is the company known for mandatory overtime? Is the boss notoriously difficult? Will you need to work on tight deadlines or travel for weeks at a time? Make sure you understand the downsides, and that none of them are dealbreakers for you.

What are the best and worst-case scenarios?

Where could the new position lead? Is the company known for promoting from within, paying for employee tuition, or taking other proactive steps that could launch the career of your dreams? On the flip side, is the company or the industry as a whole known for layoffs? Is there a culture of forcing people out once they get to a certain salary level or start nearing retirement? Think through both the best and worst-case long-term scenarios to measure the level of risk versus reward.

Is the opportunity realistic?

Everyone has existing obligations, needs, and desires, and every opportunity has its costs. Will the work hours prevent you from having dinner with your family? Can you find childcare? Will you be unable to go back to school, or take regular vacations, or pursue a passion project? Can you afford to live on the pay? Take stock of what you may miss out on if you take the position and decide whether those opportunity costs are worth it.

What about your long-term goals?

Where do you want to be in a year, five years, or ten years? How does the opportunity fit into that journey? There’s nothing wrong with taking a detour, but you should go into it with a clear-eyed understanding. Assess how the opportunity fits, and you will be able to make a better decision on whether to take it.
