How You Can Get a Maintenance Certification

Certification isn’t necessarily required for maintenance techs. But gaining one or more certifications can help you stand out from the crowd. Employers like to know that you are properly trained and able to get started on day one. In addition, higher-level positions such as maintenance manager, as well as some government jobs, may require certification. Here’s how you can get a maintenance certification.

Types of Maintenance Certification

There are many different types of maintenance certification offered through several different organizations. Some are more general, such as the Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (SMRP)’s Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT) credential. Others are highly specific, such as the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT), offered by the National Apartment Association (NAA). To find the right certification(s) for you, think about the type of work you do now or would like to do in the future. Then search for “(job title) certification.”

Earning a Maintenance Certification

All maintenance certifications require you to pass an exam. Some exams are relatively easy to pass if you have experience in the field. Others can be quite challenging and require some preparation. In addition, you may need to complete a training program and/or complete a certain number of hours on the job as part of the certification process.

In most cases, certification doesn’t last forever. You may need to recertify by passing a new exam once every few years. You may also need to earn continuing education hours as part of your recertification pathway.

The specifics vary so much depending on the certification you choose and the organization that sponsors it. Therefore, the best thing to do is to decide which certification(s) you want. Then go to that organization’s website and read all the details that pertain to the credential(s) you select.

Getting a maintenance certification may seem like a bit of a hassle. But it can be a valuable asset in your job hunt while ensuring that you remain up to date on all the best practices in your field.
