Answering “Why Do You Want to Work in This Area of Manufacturing?” in a Job Interview

“Why are you interested in this job?” is a common interview question. If you are applying for an industrial position, the interviewer may reword the question: “Why do you want to work in this area of manufacturing?”

What Are They Really Asking?

Essentially, says Indeed.com, the interviewer wants to know four things:

  • Do you understand the job tasks and responsibilities?
  • Are you enthusiastic about the work?
  • Does the job match your goals and experience?
  • What can you contribute to the company?

Now is the time to tell them why you are eager to perform this job for their company. Your answer should focus on your knowledge of the role, the aspects of the job that attracted you, and how your skills and interests apply.

Do you have a similar experience? Do you have the training or certification to operate a particular piece of equipment? Are you motivated by what the company does or produces?

Be Prepared

Before your interview:

  • Make a list of your skills and qualifications, especially those mentioned in the job description.
  • Know what the company does and what it stands for. Check the “about” pages of the company’s website to learn more about its history, mission, and values.
  • Be prepared to discuss your own career goals.

In your response, Glassdoor recommends that you avoid mentioning wages or offerings like free coffee or catered lunches, even if the pay and perks are incredible. Instead, focus on how the company can benefit from your skills. Let your enthusiasm shine through and emphasize your interest in the work.

Says Glassdoor, “Never make it seem like you applied to a high number of jobs, and this is simply another one on the list.” A person who is interested in a role is more likely to be a motivated and successful employee.

Remember, the interviewer will be evaluating your current skills, level of interest, ambition, and work ethic. Do your homework on the company and the type of position you are filling so you can speak confidently about what you have done in the past and what you hope to accomplish for them in the future.
