Why Fall 2021 is a Great Time to Find a New Job

Eighteen months into the pandemic, our lives are finally beginning to seem a little more settled. Employers are looking toward the future and have begun expanding their workforce.

There are four main reasons that Fall 2021 is a great time to look for work.

  • Employers are desperate for workers
  • Employment rates are up
  • Pay rates are rising since talent is in demand
  • Hiring ramps up in September and October

Wanted: Quality Employees

Right now, companies are desperate for skilled workers to fill clerical, light industrial, and warehouse positions. In fact, some severely understaffed companies have loosened attendance policies just to keep operating.

The Wall Street Journal says there were “more job openings in the U.S. this spring than before the pandemic hit in March 2020 and fewer people in the labor force.”

That makes the competition less fierce and gives current job seekers an advantage.

Employment Rates Are Up

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were more than 10 million job openings in the U.S. in June 2021. Employment rates in Indiana are rising steadily, especially in urban areas. In June 2021, Indiana saw a monthly increase of 9,042 job postings. With more companies hiring, now is the time to act for your pick of shifts and potentially higher pay.

An increase in hiring is good news if you’re unemployed, but also if you are unhappy with your current work situation. This is your opportunity to find a job with better working conditions, a closer commute, or work more suited to your skills, abilities, and lifestyle.

Competitive Pay & Benefits

These days, many employers are willing to pay more to attract top talent. Some companies offer other incentives like four-day workweeks, a promise of no weekend hours, attendance bonuses, or sign-on bonuses.

According to Forbes, the pandemic has influenced employee benefits, like work-from-home and hybrid work models. While not an option for sectors such as manufacturing and construction, American workers may soon gain other benefits.

An April 2021 Harvard Business Review article by the CEO of Care.com noted that “98% of the leaders … plan to newly offer or expand at least one employee benefit, prioritizing the one’s workers deem most essential, like a child and senior care benefits, flexibility around when and where work gets done, and expanded mental health support.”

Getting Back to Business

Recruiters agree the most active hiring period occurs in January and February, but September and October come in at a close second. Summer vacations are over and business tends to pick up. A return to school, familiar routines and cooler weather seems to renew energy and spur people into action.

Time to Apply

Motivated employers, increased hiring, and upward-trending wages and incentives suggest that now is the time to act if you’re a job seeker.
