Take Your Leadership to the NEXT Level

If you are a manager, you might be wondering if you’re as effective as you could be. Great leaders inspire rather than merely assigning tasks. Like any other skill, leadership requires practice, but implementing these easy tips can start to make a difference right away. Here’s how to take your leadership to the next level.

Develop a Vision

Take some time to figure out a clear vision for your department. Determine how your department fits into the larger organizational structure, and then picture it running as well as it possibly could. When you know what that looks like, turn the vision into a clear set of short-term and long-term goals.

Communicate

Explain both the vision and the goals to your team, and provide clear direction on getting started. Let your employees know what you want from them, and give everyone a written copy of your policies and procedures. Excellent communication goes both ways, so encourage feedback. Provide several options for ways to communicate with you, and take all feedback seriously.

Get to Know Your Employees

Each employee is a complex human being with individual needs, goals, and desires. Get to know them as people, not just workers. The more you understand who they are, the better you will be able to personalize your interactions to bring out the best in everyone.

Focus on Team Building

Once you understand what makes your employees tick, you can work on structuring teams in a way that takes advantage of each person’s strengths. Ultimately, you will all succeed or fail together, so creating strong and dynamic teams is critical.

Pay Attention to Ethics

Corporate scandals are rampant in today’s world, and many of the people involved never set out to purposely act unethically. Keep yourself and your employees focused on behaving ethically, and hold each other accountable.

Reflect and Improve

Set aside time for reflection. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to move from action to reaction without thinking through the implications. Pausing to reflect lets you turn down the volume and determine the best courses of action. Also, reflect on yourself, identifying areas for improvement. Take active steps to address your weaknesses and build new strengths.

Leadership is a skill that gets better with practice. To become a more influential leader, implement these tips, and then strive each day to be a little better than you were the day before.
